Is the New orkut a clone of ‘Facebook’
You may have heard about the tight competitions between orkut and facebook. Now as a part of their competition, Orkut has updated it’s look and functions. Most of them are similar to that of Facebook. I have found several similarities and now, Let us just run through the 5 major similarities between new orkut and facebook ;
1) Status Updating System :
This is one of the best feature provided by the Facebook. Orkut has started it before, but it was not that much effective.
Silently, Orkut’s Favicon Undergoes a Minor Change!
It’s been a few weeks since I noticed Orkut’s favicon was been revamped little bit. Though the design was as usual, the new favicon looks more attractive as it has been made more glossy! Though I noticed it few weeks ago, it seems guys at Orkut did not find it worth mentioning on their official blog about such a good change. If you are not aware, earlier this year, favicon of other Google products were been revamped and now Orkut too, underwent a favicon change.
Orkut’s “Shiv-Sena Hate Community” Busted!
What happened to the freedom of speech and expression, I wonder? Imagine running a community on Orkut, and being held accountable for every message posted. This is exactly what happened to Ajith D, a 19 year old computer student and an Orkut account holder, who apparently created a “Shiv Sena hate community” on Orkut. Mumbai cyber crime tracked him down and initiated criminal proceedings against him.
Chat on Orkut without a Gmail Account
Most of you must have noticed that Google Talk was not available for chatting on Orkut for people who did not have a Gmail account. Thankfully, this will not be a hindrance for Orkut users any more.
Now, Google’s chat feature is being enabled for all Orkut users, irrespective of whether they have a Gmail ID or not.
Google Latitude… Now on Orkut! A fun way to share your live location with friends!
I’m sure most of you already know about Google Latitude through an earlier post on Orkut Diary.
It’s a feature of Google Maps for mobile, as well as an iGoogle gadget, that lets you share your live location with your friends (if you chose to share it with them) and also see their locations (if they choose to share it with you).
This fun application is now on Orkut too!
Google is getting Desperate to Make Money from Orkut
I remember well, about a year ago, Google’s social networking site – Orkut started displaying Google adsense ads on Orkut users’ homepage below the ‘Community’ section. Infact, we posted about it on March 2008 here. But its really amazing to see Google getting desperate about generating more revenue from Orkut users. Guess what? This evening when I logged into Orkut, I was surprised to see the placement of Google ads between ‘Friends’ and ‘Community’ section.

War Initiated between India & Pak in Cyber Space?
Recently after attacks in Mumbai there were hot discussions going on between India and Pakistan, and from sources it was revealed that Pakistani hackers defaced a lot of Indian websites, blogs and even Orkut communities. Also there were a lot of complains in Orkut Help Group regarding, hacking of a famous Orkut Community “Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s Fan Club” having approximately 200 Thousand members.
